OUR STORY

5th Generation Family-Owned Cabin

Lewis M. Lewis was a businessman, but more importantly, he was a family man who loved adventure in the mountains of Big Sky Country, pictured here with his wife, Edith.

ABOUT LEWIS CABIN

Lewis Cabin sits on the shores of Lake Hebgen in the Gallatin National Forest of Montana. The cabin was built in the early part of the century and was permitted as part of the federal "cabin program" authorized by Congress in 1915 and operated by a fledgling agency-- the U.S. Forest Service.

The historic, log "bedroom" cabin was built from lodge pole pine trees downed on site. Rough hewn timbers line the ceiling of the 2 bedroom structure, which was recently given a new roof and foundation.

In 2019, completion of a new "main cabin" has brought modern conveniences to Lewis Cabin, things like indoor plumbing (!), flushing toilets (!) and laundry (!). But the historic warmth and charm remain. Custom built by Amish craftsmen from hand peeled ponderosa pine trees, the new main cabin beautifully integrates with the old.

The Rocky Mountain Fly Highway

Hebgen Lake and the Lewis family are featured in this documentary about fly fishing in the West, narrated by Tom Skerritt (A River Runs Through It, Top Gun, PIcket Fences).
